MagMod MagShoe 2 Review: A One-Hand Cold Shoe for Flash and Softboxes

Updated October 27, 2026
Black and orange MagMod MagShoe 2 cold shoe bracket with a tilt trigger
Our verdict

The MagMod MagShoe 2 is our pick for mounting a flash and a MagBox Pro softbox to a stand. A secured lock keeps the flash from falling off, a squeeze trigger tilts it without nuts and screws, and the included 1/4-20 adapter opens up more mounting options.

Best for

Photographers using MagBox Pro softboxes or off-camera flashes on stands who want one-handed, secure adjustment.

Choose another if

You only shoot with on-camera flash, or your softbox is not a MagBox Pro.

The cold shoe bracket is the unglamorous link between a flash and a stand, and it is where things go wrong when a heavier modifier goes on. The MagShoe 2 is MagMod’s upgraded bracket: it locks the flash securely, tilts with a squeeze, and was redesigned to support the larger MagBox Pro softboxes. We recommend it for anyone running off-camera flash with a MagBox.

Secure, then adjustable

Slide the flash in and turn the lock 90 degrees. MagMod says the secured locking mechanism prevents the flash from falling off a stand. To aim the light, squeeze the orange release trigger and tilt forward or backward, with no nuts and screws to loosen.

Built for bigger softboxes

The second version improves materials and design to carry the extra weight of the MagBox Pro 42 Octa and MagBox Pro 36 Strip. MagMod says the original MagShoe is not recommended for those larger boxes. You can hold it or attach it to a stand, and operate it with one hand.

A 1/4-20 adapter included

The included 1/4-20 inch adapter widens what you can mount: off-camera flashes, GoPro cameras, MagBox Pro softboxes and LED light panels. At 5.9 oz and about 6 × 2.13 × 2.38 inches, it adds little to a stand kit.

See the MagBox Pro 24 Octa review for the softbox it pairs with, and the tripod buying guide for support gear. Our flash modifier guide covers the whole system.

Buying recommendation

Choose the MagShoe 2 if you run MagBox Pro softboxes or off-camera flash on stands. Skip it if you only use on-camera flash.
