How we pick and review gear

The standards every CameraTested recommendation is held to, and how we treat evidence, specs and partner relationships.

A recommendation is only useful if you know what is behind it. These are the rules every CameraTested page follows.

We start with the job

Every review and guide begins with what you are trying to do: shoot a family trip, run a YouTube channel, photograph products. Gear is judged against that job, not against a spec sheet.

We lead with the answer

Each review opens with a short verdict, who the product is best for and who should skip it. Real drawbacks stay in. A review with no cons is advertising.

We keep evidence honest

  • Manufacturer specifications are labeled as the manufacturer’s numbers. We never present them as our measurements.
  • When we cite a result from testing, it comes from real testing and we say what was done.
  • Prices and codes are checked against the retailer or brand before we publish them, and updated when they change.

Partnerships never buy a verdict

Brands cannot pay for a better recommendation. Commissions and codes are how this site is funded, and they are disclosed on every page that carries them. See the affiliate disclosure.
