How to Protect a Telephoto Lens: Neoprene Covers, Hoods, Caps and Cases

A neoprene cover guards a long lens from scrapes and bumps and softens its outline outdoors. See what a cover does and does not do, and which models we cover.

Protect a telephoto lens in layers: caps and a hood for the glass, a padded bag for travel and, if you shoot outdoors, a fitted neoprene cover for the barrel. A cover guards against scrapes and bumps and softens the lens outline, but it is not a case.

What a neoprene cover does

LensCoat covers are cut for a specific lens, with clear plastic windows over the controls you use. LensCoat describes the neoprene as a thermal barrier that makes a lens more comfortable to hold in hot and cold weather, and says breaking up the lens shape makes it less noticeable to wildlife. We treat those as the maker’s descriptions, not tests.

Pick the cover for your exact lens

Our LensCoat reviews cover these lenses, each with its own control windows:

For the camera body, the LensCoat BodyBag review covers a body cover.

Classic or V2

The Classic cover is a fixed, glove-like slip-on. The V2 closes with heavy-duty Velcro so you can take it off to clean or dry it, or swap camo for a different season. A combo pack includes both.

What a cover does not do

A cover protects the surface. Keep the lens caps and hood for the glass, use a padded bag for carrying, and support a heavy lens on a tripod rather than the camera mount alone. If you are still choosing a lens, see our prime vs zoom guide and our lens mounts guide.

Frequently asked questions

What does a neoprene lens cover protect against?

Surface scrapes, bumps and dust on the barrel. LensCoat also says its neoprene works as a thermal barrier in hot and cold conditions. It is not a hard case and it does not seal a lens against weather.

Do lens covers fit every lens?

No. Covers are made for specific lenses, with windows cut for that lens's controls, so confirm the exact model before ordering.

What is the difference between Classic and V2 covers?

LensCoat's Classic cover is a fixed, glove-like slip-on fit. The V2 uses a heavy-duty Velcro closure that is quicker to remove for cleaning, and a combo pack includes both.

Does a cover replace a lens hood or a case?

No. A cover adds a thin layer over the barrel. Keep the hood and caps for the glass and use a padded case or bag for transport.
